Catherine Cooney, 86

Catherine “Katie” Cooney, age 86, of Victor, Iowa, died on Friday, Oct. 17, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Services were Monday, Oct. 20, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor with Rev. Brian Shepley officiating. Interment is be at Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Arrangements and visitation was at Smith Funeral Home, Victor.

Memorials may be designated to the Catherine Cooney Memorial Fund, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.smithfh.com .

Katie was born on Sept. 13, 1928, to John and Catherine (Brougham) Doran in Chicago, Illinois. She was raised in Victor and graduated from St. John’s Catholic School in 1947. Following her education, she returned to Chicago and was employed at Marshall Fields and Company. While living in Chicago, she sang with the Mario Lanza Choir and won many local awards.

In 1949, she was united in marriage to John W. Cooney and to this marriage five children were born: John, Ellen, Connie, Bill, and Barb. While John was in the United States Air Force, they traveled frequently, which included a stay in Okinawa; a time she really enjoyed. When John retired from the Air Force, they relocated to Victor and opened a tavern named Katie’s. Katie also held several jobs while living in Victor. She truly enjoyed her employment at Marengo Memorial Hospital as a receptionist. In 1987, Katie relocated to Torrance, California and held several retail jobs and was the event coordinator for the Carson Senior Center until she returned to Victor in 2005.

Throughout her life, Katie has enjoyed singing and dancing. She has sung at weddings and funerals since she was 10 years old until recently when her health would not allow. She also participated in the Pumpkin Vine Players in Victor. While in California, Katie went to Clown school and was part of the Frick and Frack duo that performed at many senior citizen events. She also enjoyed traveling and visited many countries in her later years. Katie was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Bridget’s and the Victor American Legion Auxiliary.

Left to miss Katie are her children, John (Patsy) Cooney of Belton, Texas, Ellie (John) Chitwood of Lodi, California, Connie (Glenn) Muranaka of Torrance, California, Bill (Julie) Cooney of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Barb (Lyle) Neuhaus of Victor; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Helen LaVelle of Memphis, Tennessee; brothers, Ed (Joan) Doran of Victor and Bill (Dorothy) Doran of Santa Monica, California.
