Celebration of life service for Ruby I. Pope, 92, North English, was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. She died Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Sunnybrook Living Care Center, Fairfield.

The Rev. Luke Caster officiated at the service.

Per her wishes, she was cremated and her ashes will be buried at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established for the English Valleys Elementary Reading Program. Cards and memorials may be sent to Don Pope, 402 E. Buchanan Ave., Fairfield, Iowa 52556.

Ruby Ione Pope was born Feb. 20, 1922, in North English, the daughter of James Carl and Iva Irene Markwell Herdliska. She taught seven years in country schools near Marengo and North English before working at Kaiser Ag Chemical in Keswick as a bookkeeper.

She also did sewing and alterations for people. She was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the church circle. She was also a member of the True Blue Club.

She married Alfred Pope Nov. 27, 1946, at the Pleasant Grove Brethren Church near Millersburg. They made their home and farmed in the rural Webster community.

She retired in 1998 and moved to her parents’ home in North English. She volunteered for over 20 years with the reading program at the English Valleys Elementary School and received several awards for her many years of volunteer work.

She enjoyed attending sporting activities with her family. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa State basketball fan.

She moved to Sunnybrook Living Care Center, Fairfield, on April 8.

Pope is survived by one son, Don (Reta) Pope, Fairfield; two granddaughters, Angie (Brandon) Coleman, Fairfield, and Katie (Dave Belluchi) Pope, Lees Summit, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Bailee, Emma and Jaxon Coleman, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Don Herdliska and sister-in-law Jennie, and one sister, Joan Axmear Griffin.
