Shirley Jean Miller, age 83 of Brooklyn, died peacefully, March 15, 2014 at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, Iowa, following a long illness. Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with Pastor Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Interment: Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: Tuesday, March 18, 9:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested memorials to be contributed to the Brooklyn Ambulance Service to "pay it forward" for all the times the staff helped her when she needed them.

Shirley is survived by her children, George Hauersperger of Marengo, Ed Miller of Marengo, and Audrey Roberts (Tom) of Marengo; five grandchildren, Amy Miller of Marengo, Alyssa Miller of Marengo, Kyle Miller (Nicole) of Lisbon, Matthew Miller, and Rachel Miller, both of Marengo; three great-grandchildren: Corey, Reed and Layla; and a brother Don Arnold of Waterloo, IA

She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Helene Chance Arnold, her beloved husband Bruce Miller in 1994, three brothers, Charles Arnold, Raymond Arnold and Dayle Arnold; and two sisters, Alene Moyer and Wanda Jenkins.

Shirley Jean Arnold was born June 22, 1930 in Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Helene Chance Arnold. She attended the Toledo schools and married Gerald Hauersperger on September 23, 1946 at St. Patrick’s Rectory in Tama, Iowa. To this union, one child, George was born. The couple later divorced.

Shirley later married Bruce Miller, the love of her life, on March 29, 1952 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. To this union, two children, Edward and Audrey were born.

Shirley was a wife, mother, and homemaker. She also worked as a nurse and bookkeeper. She was a caring and helpful person, who cared deeply for her family. Her devotion to those she loved was remarkable. She enjoyed the ability to solve crossword puzzles, and was a great cook, although she didn’t think so. Family and friends always remembered the get-togethers and the feast of food, along with great conversations. She was loved and will be missed by many.
