Barbara Esther Lydia (Schroeder) Peterson

Barbara Esther Lydia (Schroeder) Peterson, 75, of Cape Coral was called by and went to be with her Lord and Savior Feb. 27, 2014. She was born to the Rev. Clemens and Esther (Hartwig) Schroeder Aug. 1, 1938, in Hampton, Iowa. Her mother passed away in 1940, whereby her loving Aunt Alvina Schroeder moved in to take over the care of Barbara and her three brothers as they grew up. Her younger school years were in Hampton and Elma, Iowa.

The family later moved to Victor, Iowa, where her father became the pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, first in the "old" church and then became the pastor of the "new" church, in which he was very proud to be involved in the planning and construction. She completed her schooling in Victor, after which they moved to Iowa City, Iowa. She worked in the SUI Hospital as an aide, then transferred to the Hospital Medical Lab. Her father became the University of Iowa Hospital Chaplain.

On May 21, 1961, after just over a year courtship, she exchanged wedding vows with Jon D. Peterson, son of William B. and Jane E. Peterson of Williamsburg, Iowa. Barbara and Jon lived and worked in Iowa City until Jon entered into federal employment in mid 1962.

Upon retirement after 50 years in the ministry, the Rev. Schroeder and sister Alvina Schroeder moved to Hubbard, Iowa, where Clemens Jr. and wife Evelyn lived and farmed.

She enjoyed playing bingo, Internet games, posting pictures, other items and exchanging thoughts on Facebook. She also claimed "bragging rights" to son, daughters, grand and great-grandchildren. She was also a staunch supporter of husband Jon's accomplishments in running events. She was concerned about all the stretching and exercising Jon engaged in while in training preparation for road race events.

Barbara loved life, was a very devout Christian, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great- grand-mother. She enjoyed traveling, as much of Jon's employment with the federal government from 1962-1989 as a Communications Officer, was in overseas locations.

Survivors include Jon - husband, Cape Coral; Jeffrey - son, Rockport, Texas; daughters - Jodi Wagner (Vincent), Jean Peterson (Chris), Julie Thier (Greg), all in Cape Coral; brother - Robert Schroeder (Elsie) Crossville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Corey of Tampa; Abby of Fort Myers, Kody of Orlando and Stephanie, Joshua, Blake, Kyle and Selena, all of Cape Coral; five great-grandchildren, Jazlyn, Serenity, Kiera and Xavier of Fort Myers, and Gianna of Cape Coral; nephews, David (Lupe) of Temple City, Calif., Don Schroeder (MaryGrace) of Iowa City, Iowa, Stephen of Iowa, Debbie of Williamsport, Calif., Denise of Gresham, Ore., Diane of Tustin, Calif., Jane of Alta Loma, Calif., and Johanna Schroeder; and cousin, Jane Dubberke of Hubbard, Iowa.

A memorial service, "Celebration of Life," will be held Sunday, April 6, at 3 p.m. The service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS, 706 S.W. 6th Ave., Cape Coral.
