Dean R. Nieland, 87, Blairstown died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a sudden illness. Private family funeral services will be held.

Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown, at a later date.

Dean R. Nieland was born July 20, 1926, the son of Lawrence and Verna (Athey) Nieland at Blairstown.

He married Marjorie Lewis June 25, 1949, at the Blairstown Presbyterian Church.

Nieland is survived by his wife of 64 years Marjorie, Blairstown; his sons, Robert (Sheryl) Nieland, Shellsburg, and Michel (Patricia) Nieland, Belle Plaine; his daughter, Carol (Kelly) Nugent, Amana; his grandchildren, Amber Tilley, Andrea Highberger, Rhiannon Nugent, Dylan Nugent, Mark Nieland and Tony Nieland; his great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Makenzie Nieland and Ethan and Carli Highberger and Archer Nieland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Wendy Jo Schulze; one sister, Marjorie Radeke, and brother, Leo Nieland.
