Patrick Carney
Funeral services for Patrick L. Car-
ney, 95, Williamsburg, were held
Monday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. at St.
Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg.
The Rev. Anthony Conrad celebrated
the Mass.Carney, a retired farmer, died of an
apparent heart attack about 4:15 a.m.
Thursday, Dec. 8, 1988, at Marengo
Memorial Hospital, Marengo. He had
been in failing health for the last sev-
eral weeks. When he became ill at his
home earlier that morning, he was
taken to the hospital emergency room.Lector was Robert Driscoll,
Williamsburg; servers were Patrick and
Ryan Carney, both of Shawnee Mission,
Kan. Gift bearers were Angela Della-
muth, Belle Plaine; Stacie Carney,
Shawnee Mission; Lisa Carney, Ames,
and Julie (Mrs. Eldon Harl), Williams-
burg.Organist was Irene (Mrs. Hugh)
O'Meara. Soloist Elaine (Mrs. Francis)
Dillon sang "Ave Maria" and "Panis
Angelicus." Hymns by the congrega-
tion were "For all the Saints" and "On
This Day O Beautiful Mother." Ushers
were William Shannahan and Leo
Driscoll. The organist, soloist and ush-
ers were all of Williamsburg.Burial was in St. Bernard's Catholic
Cemetery, Millersburg. Casket bearers
were grandsons, Monte Riha, Vining;
Matthew and Brett Carney, both of Ames;
John Carney, Great Falls, Mont.; Brian
Carney, Rapid City, S. D., and Donald
Carney, Denver, Colo.The Catholic Order of Foresters
Rosary was recited at the Uhlmann Fu-
neral Home, Williamsburg, at 4 p.m.
Sunday Dec. 11, and a parish rosary
was recited at 7:30 p.m.Patrick Leo Carney was born March
17, 1893, near Holbrook, the son of
John and Mary O'Toole Carney. As an
infant he moved with his family to the
Parnell area. He attended the rural
schools in the area.He married Verla Septer Nov. 26,
1930, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic
Church, Iowa City, with the Rev.
Panoch officiating.After their marriage they lived south
of Victor then near Marengo. From
1940 to 1943 they farmed near Deep
River. In 1943 they purchased a farm
in the Millersburg area and lived there un-
til retiring in 1961 and moving to
Williamsburg.He was a member of St. Mary's
Catholic Church, Williamsburg, and a
former member of Knights of Colum-
bus, Marengo. In addition he was a
charter member of the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program (RSVP) and with
the group visited the Iowa County Care
Facility, the nursing homes in Marengo
and Amana and other shut-ins in the
Williamsburg area.In his retirement his hobbies were
playing cards, fishing, playing the har-
monica, taking care of his rose garden
and watching sports on television.Survivors include his wife Verla, one
daughter, Luree (Mrs. Paul) Riha, Vin-
ing, and four sons, Luverne, Parnell;
Gerald, Ames; Melvin, Shawnee Mis-
sion, Kan., and Michael, Denver,
Colo.; 18 grandchildren and
a sister, Margaret (Mrs. Edward) Bush-
mann (sic.), Lantern Park Care Center,
Coralville.Preceding him in death were his par-
ents; two sons, Leo Jr., in 1931, and
James, 1947; four brothers, James,
John, Edward and Louis, and four sis-
ters, Mary Dubishar (sic.), Bridget Cheney,
Katherine Healey and Loretta Carney,
who died at an early age, and three
grandchildren.
