Funeral services for L. Paul Pope, 55,
Millersburg, were held at 9:30 a.m. Satur-
day, July 6, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church,
North English. He died June 29, 1996, in
Hutchinson, Minn.The Rev. John Whalen officiated at the
service.Burial was in Millersburg Cem-
etery, Millersburg, with full military hon-
ors, including casket honor guard and
color guard with taps. Pall bearers were
Leroy Pope, William Pope, Terry Pope,
Dennis Kuennen, Larry Goodman, John
Robert Pope, Tom Pope, Bob Beinhart
and Bud Bills.Powell Funeral Home, North English,
was in charge of arrangements.L. Paul Pope was born July 28, 1940, in
Iowa City, the son of Lloyd and Margaret
Healey Pope. He graduated from
Millersburg High School in 1959. In 1960,
he joined the United States Army Na-
tional Guard and settled in with the Mili-
tary Police Corps. In 1960 he was hon-
ored with acceptance into West Point
Military Academy and in 1961, he joined
the regular Army Corps.He married Rosemary Owens Dec. 15,
1962, in Williamsburg. They were later
divorced.He married Paula Geiser, Glencoe,
Minn., on Jan. 29, 1972. After their mar-
riage, the couple lived in various loca-
tions throughout Europe, Asia and the
United States, depending on where Paul
was stationed.He served 22 years with the United
States Army, including four tours in Viet-
nam, two tours in South Korea, one in
Hawaii and one in Germany. In 1981, he
retired with the rank of SSG/E6 in the
Military Police Corps. Following his re-
tirement, he served as service officer for
the DAV Chapter 211, Copperas Cove,
Texas, for four years.He was a life-long member of the VFW,
American Legion and the DAV. He re-
ceived the following decorations for his
service: the National Defense Service
Medal; Vietnamese Service Medal with
Silver Star and two Bronze Service Stars;
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal;
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Good
Conduct Medal Clasp, Bronze; Vietnam-
ese Cross and Gallantry with Palm; Army
Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf
Cluster; Expert Rifle Medal; Meritorious
Service Medal and Humanitarian Service
Medal.In his spare time, he enjoyed baseball,
softball and football, as a player in his
youth and as a spectator in later years.Pope is survived by his wife; five chil-
dren, John, and wife Dora, Lake City;
Jim, and wife Cathy, San Diego, Calif.;
Julie Steen, and husband Larry,
Millersburg, and David and C. J., both
Hutchinson, Minn.; six grandchildren,
Corey, Heather, Allison, Justin, Jordon
and Jessica; his mother, Margaret Pope,
Millersburg; five brothers, John, Marion;
Bill, Leroy, and wife Vicki, Tom, and
wife Barbara, and Terry, and wife Debra,
all Millersburg; three sisters, Kay Beinhart,
and husband Bob, Harper; Janet Kuennen,
and husband Dennis, Cedar Rapids, and
Sheila Bills, and husband Buddy, Kellogg,
and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his father.
