Larry Stegge Jr., 71

Larry Stegge Jr., 71, of Havelock, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Rochester, Minn.

Services were Friday, Sept. 13, at the Resurrection of our Lord Catholic Church, Pocahontas, with the Revs. Dennis Sefcik and Richard Ries officiating. Burial with military rites was at Calvary Cemetery, Pocahontas.

Powers Funeral Home, Pocahontas, was in charge of services.

Lawrence Henry Stegge Jr. was born Nov. 2, 1941, near Pocahontas, Iowa. He was the son of Lawrence and Lillian (Sefcik) Stegge. He attended Rolfe and Fonda Schools and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1960.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a submariner from 1960-1964. He attended Emmetsburg Junior College, then transferred to Iowa State University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in Government in 1970.
Later, in 1989, he graduated from Drake University with a Masters Degree in School Administration.

In 1969, Larry married Diane Mumm in Iowa City. He taught and coached at South Clay Community Schools from 1971-1993 and at Twin River Valley from 1993-2005 and he coached at other schools in northwest Iowa. Larry also taught driver’s education for over 30 years for various schools and Iowa Central Community College.

Larry was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Northwest Iowa Two Cylinder Club, Albert City Threshermen and the Northwest Iowa Coaches and Officials Association.

Larry loved to spend time at the farm doing things with his family and antique tractors of all brands, especially John Deere two cylinders. Going to tractor shows, vegetable gardening, particularly potatoes, were favorite pastimes. He also loved attending the Albert City Threshing Show and the Wiegert Fall Fest where his family grew and harvested potatoes, demonstrating old farming equipment.

Survivors include his wife, Diane, formerly of Williamsburg; sons, Joe (Sandy) of LeMars, and Jim (Amy) of Stewartville, Minn.; three grandchildren, Sarah, Thomas, and Michael; a brother, Terry (Nancy) Stegge; sisters, Rosann Beekman and Judy (Bob) Denison and sister-in-law, Connie Stegge.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry.
