Robert B. Nieland, MD, 69, Hickory, N.C., died Tuesday, July 30, 2013. A private family service will be held.

Robert B. Nieland was born in Marengo in 1944, the son of Lester C. and Viola W. [Wisgerhof] Nieland. He attended the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He did his internship at Sacramento Medical Center, University of California, Davis, served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, residency at the University of Iowa Department of Family Practice, and was in private practice from 1974 to 2008 at the Medical Arts Clinic, Hickory.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea Lea Nieland, of the home; sons, David C. Nieland, Plantation, Fla.; Daniel R. Nieland, Matthews, N.C.; one sister, Jonel Ankrum, Missouri City, Texas; grandchildren, Ronan A. Nieland, Philomena G. Nieland, Ashlea E. Nieland and Heather A. Nieland.
