Herbert James Fry, age 84 of Williamsburg, died Friday, March 29, 2013 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, Zion Lutheran Church, Iowa City, with Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, April 1, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, and after 9:30 A.M. Tuesday, at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the Zion Building Fund or Iowa City Hospice.
Herb is survived by his wife Barbara Jean “Bobbi”; two daughters, Jami Fry Wong (Jeremy) of Encinitas, CA, and Rhia Wilkin (Chris Strohm) of Arcadia, WI; five grandchildren, Aidan and Dylan Wong, and Marena, Cameron and Carson Wilkin; two step-grandchildren, Patience Ramos and Jasmine Strohm; and two sisters, Lucille Fearneyhough of Sedalia, MO and Shirley Possehl of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Harold, Bill, Gene and DeWayne; and four sisters, Betty Vogel, Ruby Patterson, Lavera Cheney, and Nellie Patterson.
Herbert James Fry was born March 29, 1929 in Ladora, Iowa, the son of William Francis and Dollie May Waterhouse Fry.
He graduated from Marengo High School in 1948 and attended the Kansas City Art Institute for two years. Herb served in the U.S. Army from 1952- 54, during the Korean Conflict.
He married Barbara Jean Schuelke on November 30, 1956 in Odell, Nebraska. He was employed for many years in the dietary department at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.
Herb was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was known for the meticulous care of his yard, come spring, summer, winter or fall! He loved to be busy and was constantly cleaning and putzing around the house. He was a great cook and took care of preparing most of the family meals, never by a recipe, but by what he thought tasted good! Many knew him for his time out on the golf course where he first met his wife, Bobbi, fishing her out of the pond. He could drive a golf ball further than what seemed to be a million miles, but always thought he needed to improve. The same went for his bowling. When he couldn't play golf, you could easily find Herb bowling, enjoying league play and perfecting his split attack. He loved painting, taking his inspiration from the natural beauty of places he'd visited and dreamed of seeing. He taught his children how to enjoy life simply, love the Lord and have a sense of humor, and grill the perfect steak, bake cookies, garden, paint, chip a golf ball and sink a hook shot on the basketball court. He loved to dance, laugh and have a good time. His family is sure that is what he is doing right now.
