Frederick Carl Koenig was born January 10, 1916 on the I.W. Scott farm 3 miles NW of Marengo, the son of Karl and Lena Furler Koenig. He attended the Union Star School near his home and entered high school in Marengo. He finished his high school education in Los Angeles, CA, while living with his Aunt Cleo Bigelow and her husband, Biggie. During his high school education there, he took classes in auto mechanics, welding, and drafting, which were not available in the local high school. He was also employed at the Culver City Evening Star News during that time.

He returned to Iowa in 1937, lived in Cedar Rapids, and worked at Iowa Manufacturing there.

Frederick married Mildred Kahler at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids on September 29, 1940. They returned to farming on the Amos Formanek farm NW of Marengo and also farmed on the Henry Romberg farm SW of Williamsburg. They moved to their present farm east of Marengo in 1947. Along with farming, Frederick hauled and spread lime and rock for farmers in the area. He saw a need for a mobile home park near Marengo, so he designed and constructed the Iowa Valley Mobile Home Court on the farm in 1957.

He started the first L.P. Gas storage business in Iowa County in 1959. He delivered bottles and filled bulk tanks for heating hog houses, grain drying and for household use.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Antique Model A Club in Cedar Rapids, and for many years enjoyed driving his antique Model A and Model T cars in local parades.

Frederick was also a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and the Polka Club of Iowa. He loved to travel, but dancing, especially the polka was his favorite activity. He was proud of his family and their accomplishments and enjoyed the time he spent attending their special activities, such as school plays, sporting events, graduations, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and special holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and especially the annual Easter Egg Hunt he and Mildred hosted for many years for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two daughters, and their husbands, Vivian (Larry) Wandling, Atlanta, GA, and Marilyn (Jim) Freeze, Center Point, IA; a son, Allen and wife Julie Koenig of Marengo; 8 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and his wife Rudolph (Vernie) Koenig, Marengo, one brother-in-law, Harold Lueth of Fairmont, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Hilda Lueth, Fairmont, MN, and Gertrude Buswell, Marengo, a brother-in-law, Howard Buswell and one nephew, Raymond Hawkins, Brooklyn, IA.
