At age 18, he built his first home in North English. Some of his many projects included building a commercial sized electric griddle and camper trailer, and restoring vehicles.

His many jobs included working as a machinist, mechanic, carpenter, electrician, and farmer. Vernon enjoyed being with his family, working with animals, camping and traveling.
