Bernice Cronbaugh, 89

Funeral services for Bernice Cronbaugh, 89, Brooklyn, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at St. James Lutheran Church, Victor. She died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at St. Francis Manor, Grinnell.

The Rev. Michael Kolesar officiated at the service.

Burial was in Rector Cemetery, Chelsea, following a luncheon at the church.

Memorials may be made to Lutheran Word Relief.
Smith Funeral Home, Victor, was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Cronbaugh was born July 10, 1922, the daughter of Godfrey and Jennie Ryan Veit, in Brooklyn. She was raised in Hartwick and graduated from Hartwick High School in 1939.

After high school, she worked at the armory in Ankeny during World War II as a mail carrier.

She married Milton Cronbaugh Jan. 21, 1947. The couple lived near Belle Plaine before purchasing a farm near Hartwick, where they raised their family. They later moved to the Veit family farm near Brooklyn, where they lived until their health declined.

She was devoted to assisting her husband on the farm. She also had an avid interest in conservation and gardening. She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cronbaugh is survived by her children and their spouses, Bonnie and Dennis Moon, Brooklyn; Cherie and Ron Wauters, Pella; Nick and Pam Cronbaugh, Hartwick; Crystal and Bill Van Waus, Victor; Vicki and Steve Van Nevel, Brooklyn, and Leeann Cronbaugh, Iowa City; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in December 2011; her parents; one sister, Gayle Goodman; an infant son and one nephew, Gene Goodman.
