Conroy's First Supreme Sacrifice in the World's War.

On Wednesday, October 30th, a small crowd of neighbors, friends and relatives assembled in Trinity cemetery. They were gathered around a casket draped in the stars and stripes, indicating the return of a soldier. He had served his country to the full measure of his ability. He had done his part. He had made the highest sacrifice possible by laying down his life. And there is patriotic services ended. Private Wm. Young died on board a transport October 4th at the age of 28 years, 11 months and 21 days. The remains were returned to the parents and interred in the family lot of the Lutheran cemetery at Conroy. The services were conducted by Rev. R. W. Kabelitz.

Wm. Young, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl W. Young, was born Oct. 13, 1889, in South Amana. His early years were spent at that place. In 1911 the family left Amana Society and located on a farm west of Conroy. On June 5, 1917, he registered for service of his country and on July 25 he was called to the colors and ordered to Camp Pike, being assigned to Co. H. 2nd Battalion, 1 Regiment Infantry. His intentions were to locate in Conroy upon his return from service and take over the business of his father. Always a dutiful son, he commended his aged parents to divine keeping. His last letter to his pastor contained a request to remember him to all his friends and acquaintances.

The members of the family surviving are the parents and five brothers.

William Young was a splendid type of young manhood, and his death casts a gloom over the community in which he was so well known; he was of a retiring disposition, manly as the manliest, and with all classes he was deservedly popular. He met his country's call with the true American spirit, and no one went forth with a lighter heart. His death touches us all, and to the bereaved relatives the sincerest condolences are extended.
