Celebration of life service for Merton U. Geiger, 95, North English, was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. He died Sunday, April 29, 2012, at the English Valley Care Center, North English.

The Rev. Michelle Williamson officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Millersburg Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established for the North English Library and the Millersburg United Methodist Church.

Merton Ugo Geiger was born Oct. 15, 1916, in Cedar Rapids, the son of C.C. and Helen (Roller) Geiger. He attended country schools and graduated from North English High School in 1934.

He married Mildred Humphrey July 30, 1940, in Lancaster, Mo. The couple had three children, Richard, Douglas and Kathy. The couple lived all their married lives in Iowa County, where they were engaged in farming.

They retired from farming in 1979 and enjoyed traveling, dancing and spending time with family and especially grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and sharing his harvest with friends and relatives, and building and placing bluebird houses in rural areas around Iowa County.

Geiger is survived by his sons and their wives, Richard and Linda Geiger, Deep River, and Douglas and Kay Geiger, North English; one daughter and her husband, Kathy and Larry Webber, Deep River; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Janet and Scott Van Waardhuizen, Phil Geiger, Wendy and Terry Ayers, Richelle and JimRay Kluck, Michael and Wendy Geiger, Duane and Shannon Webber, Anita and Paul Bishop and Amy and Joe Baetsle; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lyle Geiger, Waukee; a niece, a nephew and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; an infant granddaughter, Amy; one son-in-law, Ron Dye; one grandson-in-law, Steve Adair, and one sister-in-law, Joyce Geiger.
