Funeral services for Carol L. Kaplan, 73, of rural Chelsea, were Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, with the Rev. Charles Johnson of the United Methodist Church in Chelsea officiating. Burial was in Rector Cemetery, Chelsea. Mrs. Kaplan died Nov. 7, 2010, at her rural Chelsea home following a lengthy illness.

Pallbearers were Fran Musel, Roger Formanek, Ray Coleman, John Behounek, Paul Kratoska and Nick Veit.

Music was provided by organist, Judy Ochs, and vocalist, Anna Upah.

Carol was born Feb. 10, 1937 to Paul and Ella Veit and was raised on a farm south of Chelsea. She attended school at Chelsea where she met Jim Kaplan. She was involved with the 4-H Club and played basketball. After graduating from high school, she attended the Cedar Rapids School of Business while living with her Aunt and Uncle Dodie and George Blake. She was employed as a legal secretary for Harold Swailes in Belle Plaine until she married Jim Kaplan on Nov. 26, 1956.

Jim and Carol rented a farm south of Chelsea where they started their family. They then moved to Grinnell where Carol was a housewife and also worked typing jobs. They eventually moved back south of Chelsea where they purchased a farm and raised their family of five children.

Carol preferred being outdoors, gardening, working the fields with her husband and was an active member of the Chelsea United Methodist Church. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Toledo Squares. Carol loved to travel! (And Jim loved doing whatever Carol wanted.) They enjoyed many trips to Branson, Mystery Bus Tours, and her dream vacation to Hawaii finally came true. Carol also thoroughly enjoyed hosting large get-togethers at the holidays, family reunions, church picnics, and hayrides.

Carol was a loving mother, adoring grandmother and great grandmother, and an exceptionally loving wife.

She is survived by two sons, Ken (Sarah) Kaplan, Victor, and Jim (Wendy) Kaplan, Marengo; three daughters, Bev Glotfelty (Bruce Gapstur), Marengo, Judy (Nick) Simmons, Victor, and Peggy (Gary) Carleton, Cedar Rapids; a brother, Jerry Veit, Chelsea; a sister, Debra (John) Sheda, Independence; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine was in charge of arrangements.
