Funeral services for Evelyn Mae Thompson Eggert Gorsh, 87, Marengo, formerly of Ladora, were held Wednesday, March 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. She died Saturday, February 27, 2010, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo.

Rev. Jim Davis officiated the service. Burial was in the Ladora Cemetery.

Memorials may be contributed to the Ladora United Methodist Church or Hospice Compassus.

Evelyn Mae Thompson was born April 29, 1922, near Ladora, in Iowa County, the daughter of James and Virginia Maude Scully Thompson. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and graduated from Ladora High School in 1939. She attended the Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls and received a teaching certificate. She returned to teach in the rural Iowa County schools.

Evelyn married Dean Eggert Feb. 4, 1944, in Ladora. To this union four daughters were born. Dean died Feb. 2, 1978. Evelyn married Vernon Gorsh Dec. 9, 1978, in Ladora. He died Feb. 7, 1995. Evelyn was a long time member of the Ladora Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and also taught Sunday school for many years until suffering a stroke in 1993. She had since made her home at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Deanna Wade Cook (Bill), Marengo; Dixie Moody (Jim), Monticello, Ill., and Crystal Benscoter (Stratton “Whitey”) Marengo; eight grandchildren, Johnnette Kruse (Tim), Williamsburg; Audra VanBennekom (Doug), Marengo; Jeffrey Wade, Williamsburg; Sara Jo Benscoter, Marengo; David Moody (Megan), Lombard, Ill.; Eric Moody, Alex Moody and John Moody, all of Monticello, Ill.; and five great-grandchildren, Dakota and Chyanne Kruse, Kylie and Brittany VanBennekom, and Sydney Wagner. Also surviving are a sister Janice Davis (Kenneth), Ladora; a brother-in-law, Maynard Moser, Richland Center, Wis., and a special step-daughter Dorothy Wade (Larry) and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a daughter, Juanita in infancy, a son-in-law John Wade, a great-grandson, Riley Wagner, two sisters, Lucille Thompson and Marjorie Moser and a brother Melvin Thompson.
