Art Leinen KEOTA - J. Arthur Leinen, age 86, of Keota, died Sunday, February 7, 2010, at the English Valley Care Center in North English after a long illness. Art was born October 29, 1923, in rural South English, Iowa, to John William and Anne Marie (Britten) Leinen and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Harper. He then served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman on a Landing Ship Dock and Troop Transport primarily in the Pacific Theater during World War II. On September 1, 1956, he married Norma Jean Fagan at St. Peter’s Church at Temple Hill, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in the South English area near where Art was born and raised until moving to Keota in 1988. Art was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, where he served as lector and lay minister, and the V.F.W. He also served on the Catholic School Board five years, where he served as president for three years, and served on the Keokuk County Extension Council for two terms. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight of the 3rd Degree and Faithful Navigator, District Deputy and Comptroller of the 4th Degree. Art enjoyed running the combine for his son-in-law and helping his son prepare tax returns. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, playing cards, singing in the church choir and delivering meals on wheels. Survivors include his wife of 53 years: Norma of Keota; son: Robert (Janice) Leinen of North English; daughter: Mary Sue (Kevin) Bouslog of South English; four grandchildren: Travis, Erin and Tyler Bouslog and Christopher John Leinen; a brother: Leon (Rose) Leinen of West Des Moines; four sisters: Mary Catherine Gerleman of Cedar Rapids, Bernadette (Wilbert) Adam of Keota, Eva Parrish of Cedar Rapids and Rose Ann (Doc) Giltner of Akron, Ohio and two sisters-in-law: Darlene Leinen of Kalona and Jerri (Don) Moeller of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Jerome and Donald Leinen and two brothers-in-law: Gus Gerleman and Whit Parrish. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2010, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 5:00 p.m., followed by a K.C. Rosary. A memorial fund has been established for Windthorst Council #1457 Knights of Columbus and Holy Trinity Parish in Keota. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Art and his family.
