Leona Steinke has accomplished her ultimate goal of this earthly life to be with our Lord and Savior when she was carried Home on January 30, 2010, at Beautiful Savior Home, Belton, MO, under Grace Hospice care. She has willed her body to KU Medical Center for student medical education. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 7, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Raymore, MO, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Leona was born on April 17, 1915, near Williamsburg, IA, to Fred and Katherine Iburg. She lost her mother when she was 3 1/2 years old. Rudolph "Rudy" Steinke and Leona were married June 13, 1935, and they had a family of four boys. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy and three of their sons, Roger, Ronald, and Leon, and her brother, Harold Iburg of Williamsburg, IA. She is survived by her oldest son, Larry Steinke and his wife Betty of Peculiar, MO; a daughter-in-law, Frankie Mahaffey; Leona's three sisters, Dorothy Freeland of Lima, OH; Lu Etta Von Ahsen of Grand Island, NE; and Alice Olson of Littleton, CO; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. For the first 15 years of married life, Leona was a housewife. After that, she worked in the cafeteria and laundry at KU Med. Center, sewed at Lee Jeans, and then served food at Shawnee Mission H.S. cafeteria that led to management of Hocker Grove Jr. High cafeteria. Rudy and Leona left the old homestead in Overland Park, KS, to Larry and Betty and moved to Tuscumbia, MO, to own/operate the Lost Dutchman Tavern. She later operated the Junction Liquor store of Bagnell Dam, MO, then retired to East Gate Retirement Center in Peculiar, MO. Leona is best known for her love and support, breads and bake goods, which she shared with family, friends, and East Gate neighbors/church members along with numerous afghans she would crochet for family, friends and for the nursing home that she later became a resident. The family suggests donations be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements: Park Lawn Funeral Home.
