MARENGO DEMOCRAT 03 MAY 1906
Catharina VonLienen - Died; at her home in Marengo, Iowa, on Friday, April 27, 1906, at 5:25 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Catharina VonLienen, aged 83 years, 10 months and 19 days. Catharina VonLienen was born in Oldenburg, Germany, on June 8, 1822, and grew to womanhood in the fatherland. Here she married to Diedrich Johnson, who died eight years later. In 1857 she was again married; this time to Frederick VonLienen, and to them were born three children, Matilda, now Mrs. H. J. Timmerman; George VonLienen, of Iowa township, and Frederick, of this city. In the year 1866 the family moved to America and settled at Homestead, Iowa. In 1867 Mr. VonLienen died of typhoid fever, and again left a widow. She sold the home near Homestead and settled near Victor living there until 1890 when she moved to Marengo, and has made her home here ever since. Mrs. VonLienen was a kind and thoughtful mother, self sacrificing and of noble christian character. She was a devoted member of the Evangelical Lutheran church, to which denomination she was faithful to the end. The funeral occurred on Monday, April 30, at which time many friends gathered at the residence to pay a last tribute of respect to her whom they loved in life. Rev. George Bayer conducted the services, and at their conclusion the remains were tenderly conveyed to Homestead and laid beside her husband to await the general resurrection. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends is with the bereaved family.
