Pioneer Republican - Marengo, Iowa - MRS. SWEZEY, 85, DIES IN MARENGO, SERVICES HELD
Services for Mary (Mrs. Lewis) Swezey, 85, Marengo, were Thursday, August 9, in the First Presbyterian church, Marengo. The Rev. David Dugan officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service. Mrs. Swezey died early Tuesday, August 7, 1979, in Marengo Memorial hospital, following a stroke suffered at her home, Saturday, August 4. In the spring, she had suffered a heart attack, but recovered and remained active until her final illness. Organist Erma (Mrs. Milford) Langlas accompanied soloist Robert Buelow, who sang "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Kevin Vogt, a great-grandson; nephews James Tompkins and George Winslow; John Wilkinson, a nephew-in-law; also Richard and Forest Peters. Burial was in the Marengo cemetery. Caring for the flowers were Hazel (Mrs. Forest) Peters, Charlotte (Mrs. Henry) Willie and Mildred Hoyt. The daughter of Adam Spencer and Frances Melvina James, Frances Mary Swezey was born August 3, 1894, at Greenfield. She graduated from Fontanelle high school and was associated with a sister, Mrs. Asa Pace, in a millinery shop in Marengo, following high school graduation. October 22, 1916, she married Lewis B. Swezey in Greenfield. The couple made their home in Marengo where her husband, a graduate of Drake University school of pharmacy, had became a druggist. The Swezeys operated the Swezey Rexall Drug in Marengo for nearly 50 years. Upon retirement, they traveled the state doing relief work for other druggists in their businesses. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1966. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Order of Eastern Star, serving as a Past Matron, Iowa County Historical society, the First Presbyterian church, Marengo. She was a charter member of the Iowaco chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and had served as a regent. Surviving are a daughter, Ada Jane Vogt, two grandchildren, John Vogt and Mary D. (Mrs. Gary) Miller, Marengo; six great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Irwin Dwigans, Knoxville. She was preceded in deathy by her husband in February 1967, per parents, a son-in-law, Melvin Vogt in June 1957; and seven brothers and sisters, Clyde, Ernest, Karl and Adam James, Katherine Pace, Clara Knouf and Letta Jacobs.
