Valerie was born on October 11, 1967, in Malcom, Iowa to James and Carmen Cummings Kriegel. She was raised on the family farm and attended Brooklyn schools. She graduated from BGM High School with the Class of 1986. Following her education she worked for Montezuma Manufacturing Company. On August 17, 1991, she was married to Bradley Schafbuch in Brooklyn. The couple lived near Victor and were the parents of two children, Dustin and Kayla. She worked as a production worker for over 21 years at Victor Manufacturing Company. Valerie was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Victor and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed walking, gardening, shopping, movies, scrapbooking and making cards. Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed attending their school functions. Survivors include her husband, Bradley Schafbuch of Victor; two children, Dustin and Kayla Schafbuch of Victor; her father, James Kriegel of Malcom; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gary and Joan Schafbuch of Victor; ten sisters, Carmen Cordes of Guernsey, Rosemary Neighbors of Malcom, Kathy Whitsell of Chelsea, Connie Buffum of Grinnell, Debbie Hargis of New Sharon, Cindy Schmidt of Montezuma, Janet Plants of Brooklyn, Angie Roller of Holiday Lake, Vickie Bunn of Brooklyn and Janine Hawkins of Brooklyn; three brothers, Gary Kriegel of Tama, Don Kriegel of Malcom and Roger Kriegel of Deep River. She was preceded in death by her mother; and two brothers, Danny and Elmer Kriegel; and one sister, Shirley Ahrens.

Memorials may be directed to St. Bridget’s Catholic Church or to the American Cancer Society.
