Lewis E. Hohenshell, was born on March 14, 1919, in North English, Iowa, a son of Otha T. and Martha A. (Feldman) Hohenshell. He attended North English High School. On August 13, 1940, he was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Morrow, at the Christian Church in Cedar Rapids. He was a federal U.S.D.A. poultry inspector in Wellman, West Liberty, and later worked at custodial service U of I Children Hospitals. He lived in the North English area for over 20 years and Wellman for over 60 years before moving to the Halcyon House in Washington in 2004. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman and a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed, fishing, visiting with friends and he loved his music. He loved playing the accordian, harmonica, singing and whistling. He was known as the “Whistler” at Halcyon House. Lewis died on Monday, December 29, 2008, at the Halcyon House in Washington, after a brief illness, at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his wife Wilma of Washington, IA; a son Larry (Linda) Hohenshell of Ankeny, IA; 2 daughters Connie (Lain) Messer and Patricia (Harry) Karnes all of Washington, IA; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and a sister Carlene Van Sant of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Don Hohenshell; and 2 step brothers R.G. Hohenshell and Turl Hohenshell. A memorial fund has been established for Halcyon House and Washington County Hospice.
