CEDAR RAPIDS - Lt. Col. Ret. James H. Franey I, of 2837 13th Ave. SE, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at home after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, All Saints Catholic Church, by the Rev. David O'Connor. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 6 p.m.

Survivors include two sons, James H. (Shari) Franey II of Pennsylvania and Douglas (Nancy) Franey of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Kolleen Franey Turley of Cedar Rapids and Wendy (Lloyd) Lyons of Indiana; a brother, Joseph Franey Jr. of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Seth and Cy Greathouse, Lorelei Cairy, Jason Turley and Colin, Carolyn, Micaela and Jana Franey; and a very special friend, Julia Tschopp.

James was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a son, Timothy.

James was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Joe Franey Sr. and Mildred Halverson Franey. He served in the European Theatre as a pilot of P-38s during World War II, retiring as a lieutenant colonel from the Air Force. He married Mary Lou Wilson on July 3, 1952. She died Nov. 5, 2002. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Reserve Officers Association, American Legion, Elks, 94th Fighter SQDN Association and Friends of the Library.

James was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a friend to all. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy or St. Vincent DePaul.
