Gwendolyn R. Pexa, age 89 of Menomonee Falls, WI, formerly of Marengo, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at Tamarack Place in Menomonee Falls, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 3, 2008, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to Pennies for the Park, for playground equipment at the Marengo City Park.

Gwen is survived by her daughter Stephanie Hicklin and husband Keith of Sussex, WI, and two grandchildren, Stacy Hicklin of Boynton Beach, FL and Steven Hicklin of Stevens Point, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John F. Pexa on June 2, 1995 and a brother, Ralph Morton.

Gwendolyn Ruth Morton was born September 7, 1918 in Ocheyedan, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Sylvia Stewart Morton. She graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1936. Gwen attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1965 with a BA in education. She began her teaching career in the rural schools and became a deputy superintendent overseeing 30 rural schools. Gwen married John F. Pexa on July 24, 1946 in Sibley, Iowa. The couple moved to Marengo where Gwen taught 1 st and 2 nd grade in Ladora for the next 5 years. Gwen left teaching for 11 years to raise their daughter, but returned to teach 1 st grade at Iowa Valley School in Marengo. She retired in 1983. She and her husband wintered in Texas for many years, and enjoyed traveling to numerous places. Gwen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Iowa County Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening and yardwork, a good game of bridge and was a crossword enthusiast. She especially cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. Gwen moved to Wisconsin several years ago to be near her daughter and family.
