Born September 24, 1909, in Williamsburg, Iowa, to parents Otto Mumm and Anna Mumm, he attended schools in the Amana colonies as a child and graduated from Williamsburg High School. Carl worked as a baker and butcher before enlisting with the U.S. Army at the onset of World War II in 1942. While on a tour of duty in Europe, his tank destroyer unit was one of many to storm the beaches of Normandy and participated in the historic capture of the Bridge of Remagen. He sustained injury in that effort and would later be awarded the Purple Heart. After returning to the States, he met Dorothy Rose Anderson and the two were married in 1948 in South Bend, Indiana. He then was employed with La-Plant Choate, Allis Chalmers, and the US. Postal Service.
Carl was active with the Disabled American Veterans and volunteered at St. Luke's Methodist Hospital. He also enjoyed fishing, attending church and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his sons, David Mumm of Dallas, Texas and Fred E. Anderson of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, his brother Otto Mumm of Cedar Rapids, and his sisters Clara Mumm and Gertrude Granger, both of Westminster, California.
Carl's greatest gift was his love and devotion to his family and friends by whom he will be greatly missed.
Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
