CEDAR RAPIDS - Verona Schmidt, 87, of 50 27th Ave. Dr. SW, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, in her home after a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, by Pastor Daniel Johnson. The family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Burial: 2 p.m. Monday, St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Homestead.

Survivors include her husband, Harlan; a son, Ronald (Marleen) of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Tamara Kappler and Scott (Janelle) Schmidt; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Cassidy and Braden; two sisters, Lillian Johnson and Venita Mueller; and four brothers, Carl Ficken, William Ficken, Edgar Ficken and Victor Ficken.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara; and a sister, Elfrieda Folkman.

Verona was born Oct. 16, 1920, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Steinke) Ficken, in Williamsburg, Iowa. On Jan. 4, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harlan Schmidt. A farm wife and homemaker for over 25 years, Verona also had worked for the Earl May Garden Shop and the Cedar Rapids Airport.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Mercy, 315 18th Ave., Hiawatha, IA 52233 or Zion Lutheran Church, 201 First Ave., Hiawatha, IA 52233, in memory of Verona.
