Robert Gene Humphrey was born on July 14, 1923 in the Green Valley community near North English, IA, the son of Clarence and Alba Popham Humphrey. He grew up in the Green Valley community and graduated from North English High School in 1941. Bob served in the Marines during World War II. He was awarded the Victory Medal and received a Presidential Unit Citation with the 2nd Marine Division. On May 28, 1947, Bob married Betty Lou Cox at the Methodist Parsonage in Ladora, IA. Bob worked as a general contractor in Cedar Rapids, IA for many years. He was a long time member of St. James United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He and Betty also made their home in Arizona, Texas and Louisiana before moving back to North English in 2005. Robert was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War. His greatest joys were for his family and the church. He also enjoyed reading and walking as long as his health permitted. He died following an extended illness at the English Valley Care Center in North English on Monday, January 7, 2008. Bob lived 84 years, 5 months and 24 days. He is survived by his wife Betty of North English, IA; daughters Sue Brownlee and husband Tom of Indianola, IA and Martha Auman and husband Rick of Land O Lakes, FL; five grandchildren: Matthew & Mallory Auman, Phillip, Parker and Wendy Brownlee; brothers Vaughn (Sam)Humphrey and wife Bernadine of Bonita Springs, FL; David Humphrey and wife Carolyn of Jacksonville, FL; and a sister Mary Margaret (Peg) Kay of Wilmot, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Lloyd Humphrey and sisters Edith Humphrey and Trela Humphrey. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 from 5 PM to 8 PM... A memorial fund has been established for the North English United Methodist Church.
