Charles Henry Hibbs, age 94 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marengo, died Saturday, September 15, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following complications of surgery. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Dr. Robert P. Robinson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Public Library or the Iowa Commission for the Blind.

He is survived by a three children, Janet Byram and husband Harold of Georgetown, TX, Sheryl Peshek and husband Richard of Mount Vernon, and Robert and wife Barbara of Marshalltown; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend and classmate, Virginia McCloskey of West Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Helen in 1998.

Charles Henry Hibbs was born February 21, 1913 in Marengo, Iowa the son of Robert R. and Helen Gode Hibbs. He attended the Marengo schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1930. After attending Coe College in Cedar Rapids for a year, Charles was employed by the family business, the Henry Gode Dry Goods Company until it closed in 1966. Charles married Helen G. Kramer on October 9, 1936. In 1972, the couple moved to Cedar Rapids, where Charles was employed by the J. S. Cook Wholesale Dry Goods Co. until his retirement in 1978. From 1979-1993 he was a bailiff in the 6 th Judicial Court system, a position he thoroughly enjoyed. Charles was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids and a longtime member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed the outdoors as an avid hunter, fisherman and canoeist.
