George Howard Gilmore was born on July 7, 1913 in Garden Grove, IA, a son of Alexander and Sarah Little Gilmore. He graduated from North English High School in 1931. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Lou Harrington on December 15, 1933 in Toulon, IL. George Worked many years at the English Valleys Cooperative Creamery and also served on the Board of Directors. He started at the North English Creamery in the spring of 1933 as a day worker making butter. He did this until 1948 when he left to do plumbing work. He did heating and plumbing until 1952 when he sold the business to George Neff. In 1952, he became the manager of the Creamery. The Creamery was a very important part of his family for many years. He was a big promoter of the Creamery Picnic for many years and put in a lot of hard work each year. He was manager until 1967, when he retired and went to work for Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of the Stellapolis Lodge #391 AF & AM in Williamsburg, the Odd Fellows Lodge, the North English Rotary Club and was a member of the North English Methodist Church. George died peacefully on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at the English Valley Care Center in North English at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 5 days. He is survived by a son Frederick E. (Judy) Gilmore of Huntsville, AL; daughters Michelle S. Blaylock (Pat) of Fairfax Station, VA and Gelene K. Harris (John) of Muscatine. IA; 7 grandchildren: Kacie L. Engle (Blair), Jaime L. Proctor (Bill), Shelby G. Guyer (Scott), Kyle P. Blaylock (Genevieve), Timothy L. Harris (Andrea), Nicholas G. Harris, and Joseph M. Harris (Autumn); 3 great grandchildren: Jenna R. Engle, Brett T. Engle, and Kaleb D. Blaylock; a sister Frances Riess of North English, IA; and a sister-in-law Faye Gilmore of Webster, IA. George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers David, Robert & Fred Gilmore and sisters Evelyn Harvey & Margaret Kirkpatrick. A Celebration Of Life Memorial Service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 18, 2007, with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Visitation will be Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Powell Funeral Home from 4:30-7:30 pm. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.. A memorial fund has been established for The North English Methodist Church and English Valleys Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation.
