VINTON: Mervyn L. “Red” Long, age 76, died Friday, February 23, 2007 in his home, surrounded by his loving family, from complications of COPD. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4401 42nd St. NE, in Cedar Rapids with Pastor David Bissell officiating. Interment will be held at 2 PM at the Piersoll Cemetery in Green Valley, Iowa County, IA. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton from 4 to 7 PM on Monday. A Memorial Fund has been established. Mervyn was born September 9, 1930 at Green Valley to Clarence and Dorothy (Clarambeau) Long. On July 4, 1949 he married Norma Achenbach at Keota. The couple have made their home in Vinton the past twelve years. For many years Mervyn served as the mayor of Walford. Prior to his retirement he was a self-employed steel fabricator who had the unique ability to design and create steel products. This knowledge was passed on to his grandsons who also share in this special gift. Mervyn was baptized at the Seventh Day Adventist Church and will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and “papa”. One of his favorite past times was raising and caring for exotic animals. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and New York Yankee fan. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Norma of Vinton; five daughters, Sandi (Troy) Hames of Coralville, Becky Hansel of Wellman and Fiance, Maurice Barr of Cosgrove, Debbie (Glenn) Newman-Karpinske of Galena, IL, Kim (Gerald) Chaloupka of Solon, and Christine (Todd) Cleveland of Poplar Grove, IL; eighteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley (Bill) Ross of Cedar Rapids, Linda (George) Middleton of Hiawahta; two brothers, Gary, (Margo) Long of Cedar Rapids, and John (Shirley) Long of Coralville; his uncle Bob (Pat) Clarambeau of McMinnville, OR; his aunt, Lou Denman of Spokane, WA; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and loving neighbors whom he considered his “Vinton Family”. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son-in-law, Jack Hansel. Mervyn will be greatly missed but not forgotten by those who knew and loved him. His family wishes to extend their appreciation to Mercy Hospice.
