MARENGO~Gwendolyn "Brownie" Esther Mumby, 90, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, in Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following a brief illness. She has donated her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. There will not be a visitation or memorial service, per her wishes. She found it sad to attend memorial services and did not wish to have others do so.
Survivors include four sisters-in-law, Mary Brown of Cedar Rapids, Marlene Sloan and Lula Gorsh of Victor, and Irene Sloan of Altoona. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Brownie was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde "Pete" Mumby; her father, Melvin Brown; her mother, Esther Brown Sloan; her stepfather, Benjamin Sloan; three brothers, Drennen Brown, Eugene Sloan and Dallas Sloan; and a sister, Onla Sloan Haman.
Brownie was born Jan. 21, 1916, in Ladora, the daughter of Melvin and Esther Randolph Brown. She graduated from Ladora High School in 1935. She married Clyde "Pete" Mumby on Feb. 25, 1947, in Vinton.
She lived all of her life in Iowa County, taking care of her grandparents when she was younger and then being a helpmate to her husband as he farmed. She enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, going to garage sales and being a homemaker. She also loved having the neighborhood children come to her home when she lived in Ladora. She had been a member of Ladora Methodist Church since 1954.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Rose Haven Nursing Home staff for their good care and also to Amenity Hospice for their care given during Brownie's brief illness.
