Agnes "Lavonia" McMahon, 92, of West Ridge Care Center, died there Friday, June 2, 2006, following a long illness. Services: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Steven Rosonke. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Lavonia is survived by her sister, Kathleen Dougherty of Cedar Rapids; three nephews, Joseph (Jane) Simkavitz and Gerry (Lois) Rayman, both of Cedar Rapids, and John (Diane) Dougherty of Marion; four nieces, Mary Patricia (David) Ceynar of Thorton, Colo., Francis (Lee) Shonka of Mesa, Ariz., and Marlene (Robert) Smejkal and Judy (Terry) Hensley, both of Cedar Rapids; many great-nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, Lavon McMahon, Kerney Vogel and Irene McMahon, all of Cedar Rapids; former neighbors and cherished friends Ruth Ann and Dale Froelich and their three daughters (whom Lavonia considered grandchildren), Carrie, Lorie and Susan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1979; her parents, Hugh and Catherine Sullivan Butler; three sisters, Anna Mary McHugh, Lucy Simkavitz and Winifred Rayman, and their spouses; and two brothers, John and William Butler, and their spouses.

Lavonia was born April 11, 1914, in Holbrook in Iowa County. She moved with her family to Cedar Rapids and attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from St. Patrick High School. She married Arthur E. McMahon on June 14, 1946, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

She worked many years in the accounting department at Nash Finch. She retired in 1978. She had previously worked at Killian's and Craemer's Department Stores.

Lavonia had many friends, especially her card group of many years. She loved to read, bird watching and working in her beautiful flower garden. Lavonia and her sister enjoyed many bus tours, especially their trip to Ireland in 1981.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or to the family.
