Mary L. Gryp, age 88, of Victor, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Monday, April 17, 2006, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor with Rev. Brian Shepley officiating. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Jeff Gryp, Joel Gryp, Todd Gryp, Tony Gryp, Wes Gryp and Dennis Wentland. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, with the family present to greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. A rosary will be held at 5 p.m. and a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Mary was born the daughter of Richard and Leontina Blanckaert Van Horbeck near Belle Plaine, Iowa on November 27, 1917. She was raised near Belle Plaine and attended country school near her home in Iowa County. She was married to Isadore Gryp on December 28, 1936, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. To this union were born four children: Elaine, John, David and Gary. The couple farmed together in the Victor area. Mary was also a cook at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn for thirteen years. Her faith was very important to her and she was a longstanding member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor. She enjoyed crocheting, was an avid bingo player, and bowled until her 85th birthday. Mary is survived by her daughter Elaine Wentland of Altoona, Iowa; her sons, John (Jean) Gryp of Victor and Gary (Cindy) Gryp of Victor; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-six great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; her sister Alma DeCapp of Silvis, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Isadore in 1983; her son David Gryp in 1999; her brothers Maurice and Joe Van Horbeck; and her sister Helen Sanders.
