Andrew P. Brecht, 73, of 512 B Ave. NW, died Saturday afternoon, April 1, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Memorial services, with military honors: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church by Pastor Jonathan Offt. Friend may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Esther; children, Edward and wife Connie, James and wife Pam and Roger and wife Dee, all of Cedar Rapids, Kelly Harp and husband Bill, Liberty, Mo., Kim Connolly and husband Bill, Marion, Tom and partner Leah Anderson, Solon, and David and wife Deborah, North Liberty; sister, Mary Ann Frimml, brother, Ron Brecht and wife Sandra, and sister-in-law, Merita Brecht, all of Marengo; 18 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Elva (Knock) Brecht, and siblings, Derald Brecht, Elvera Valente and Dean Brecht.

Andrew was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Marengo, and had been a resident of Cedar Rapids since 1956. He married Esther I. Ramey on April 12, 1958, in Morrison, Ill. Andrew was employed at Wilson-Farmstead Meat Packing Plant for 27 years, retiring in 1990. He later worked for the Cedar Rapids Parks Department for 10 years until taking a medical leave in 2005. Andrew was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He served aboard the USS Hornet with Squadron 33.

He was a member of American Legion Hanford Post 5, 40 & 8 and P-3 Retirees Group. Andrew enjoyed gardening, fishing and golfing. He was an avid Hawkeyes fan as well as a fan of the Cubs and Bears.

Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Hanford Post 5.

A memorial fund has been established.
