Davenport Boy Loses Life in Swirling River

Ervin Blocker, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Blocker, 510 East Seventh Street was drowned in the flood swollen Mississippi River shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday when he was swept from shallow water in LeClair park west of the foot of Ripley street into deep water off the sea wall marking the south end of the park. His body has not been recovered. Police Officers, Sheriff Walter Beuse, and deputy sheriffs manned two county emergency crew boats and dragged the river under floodlights until late Thursday night while a crowd numbering several thousand persons stood on the park. The Blocker boy could not swim.
Deputy Sheriff Joe Atkinson said Dick Duley, 516 east Seventh street; Bob Stachovich, 6071/2 LeClair street, and Dean Hadaway, 704 Franklin Street, all about the Blocker boy's age, told him they were puddling in the water which covered the south portion of LeClair park just a short time before the Blocker boy was drowned. His companions told the deputy sheriff that the Blocker lad stood up in the water in the park where it was two and one-half feet deep, extended his hands and shoved his body forward with his feet. He was headed toward the sea wall, on the top of which there is an iron fence consisting of two railings, the lower one of which was beneath the surface of the water because of the stage of the river. The Blocker boy's friends said he slipped through the rail and beyond the sea wall into water, which emergency crew members reported was close to 20 feet in depth. Ervin Blocker was born Oct. 11, 1929 in Davenport, Graduating from the sixth grade at Lincoln School several weeks ago. He was preparing to enter Sudlow intermediate in the fall. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and was active in scouting activities. Surviving, besides his parents, is a brother Richard, 8, and a sister Anita, 18, both at home; The maternal grandmother, Mrs. Carrie Ahrens, of Davenport; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Blocker, Springfield, Minn., and several aunts and uncles. Prior to starting the search for the Blocker boy's body emergency crew members answered a false drowning alarm and a call to remove Sheldon Decker, reported stranded in a house at the foot of Keota avenue. Decker was able to wade thru shallow water and services of the rescue squad were not needed. Someone in the neighborhood, observing the boats which rescue squad members were preparing to launch, called police headquarters, reporting a boy drowned at Minnie avenue and Harbor road in Blackhawk creek, but this report was false. The call for the rescue crew to search for the Blocker boy's body was received eight minutes later.
