That is spectacular! What a treasure of an article to find! Thank you for letting me know and adding it to this thread. Young Henry was my GGgrandmother's brother. He and his mother (my GGGgrandmother Emma) share the same gravemarker at Morgan Cemetery, which yes was Nissen cemetery in the early years. This gravemarker is only steps away from Wilhelm & Catherine Schiernbeck's marker, whom I think we've established as Wulf and Anna's father and mother.

From rereading these messages I think we've concluded that Wulf and Anna are siblings. From this new article, can we now safely make the connection that my Wilhelm is also a sibling with all three being children of Wilhelm and his first wife Margretha (sp?)? No, not yet.

Here again is the 1880 Census from Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa:
Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace

Wilhelm SCHIERNBECK Self M Male W 45 HOLSTEIN Farmer HOLSTEIN HOLSTEIN

Catterina SCHIERNBECK Wife M Female W 40 HOLSTEIN Keeping House HOLSTEIN HOLSTEIN

Emma SCHIERNBECK Dau S Female W 13 HOLSTEIN At Home HOLSTEIN HOLSTEIN

Wilhelm SCHIERNBECK Son S Male W 9 IA At School HOLSTEIN HOLSTEIN

Wilhelm SCHIERNBECK Other S Male W 25 IA Farmer HOLSTEIN HOLSTEIN

1. Yes the census contained many errors.
2. Wilhelm is the right age to be Wilhelm's son, & Wulf and Anna's brother.
3. BUT ... My Wilhelm's death record states his parents as Christian & Anna (Johns) Schiernbeck. There could of course be a mistake, but this is pretty specific.
4. ALSO ... even though the newspaper article states "nephew" maybe they only treated my Wilhelm as a brother, maybe in actuallity he was a cousin.

I just don't feel confident yet about this. With so many folks involved you'd think some article, obit, bio, something more would mention the connection. But no. Here is my Wilhelm's obit for future reference on this thread.

August 29, 1929 newspaper clipping (Denison or Schleswig?):
WM. SCHIERNBECK DEAD

Funeral services for William H. Schiernbeck were held last Thursday, August 22, at the home of Herman Schiernbeck, at Schleswig, in charge of Rev. Kielhorn. Burial was made in the Morgan township cemetery. His death occurred August 19, at Davenport, at the age of 75 years and 3 months.

Mr. Schiernbeck was born in Husum, Germany, May 18, 1854, and came to America in the year 1880, locating in Scott county. From there he came to Crawford Creek township until 1904 when he moved to Davenport where he has since made his home. On January 29, 1883 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Koch and to this union eight children were born. In 1897 his first wife passed away and he was again married on January 16, 1899 to Amelia Hansen, and to them one child was born who died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Amelia Schiernbeck, six children namely: Mrs. Wm. Carstens of Buck Grove; Herman and Carl of Schleswig; Mrs. Fred Zauss of Wahoo, Nebraska, and Mrs. Chas. Williams and Mrs. Chris Koch of Davenport; two step children, Otto Hansen of Davenport and Mrs. Frank Carpenter of Sioux City; 36 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Two children, Mrs. Herman Miller and August Schiernbeck, who preceded him in death.

Now for some reason I have listed as Wilhelm's birth place as Garting, Husum, Germany. I do not recall where I received that information. Does anyone know where Wulf Schiernbeck was born?

Also for this thread is this news article:
Elsie's Scrapbook, 1939:
Local Couple Takes Vows at Lutheran Church Tuesday

Miss Marie Schiernbeck and Leslie Schiernbeck were married Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 12 at 2:30 o'clock before the altar of the Immanuel Lutheran church in Schleswig. Rev. E. F. Schwidder, pastor of the church, read the double ring ceremony. The bridal couple was attended by Miss Milda Wiedemann, friend of the bride, and Leonard Schiernbeck, brother of the groom.

The bride wore a wine colored chiffon velvet dress with a shoulder corsage of tea roses and baby breath. Her attendant wore a grey crepe dress with a corsage of roses.

Mrs. Schiernbeck is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schiernbeck, living southeast of Ida Grove, and the bridegroom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schiernbeck, of Otter Creek township. Although the names of their parents are the same, the two Herman Schiernbecks are not related.

A wedding dance was held at the Pla-Mor Tuesday evening and the Joe Sinkule orchestra of Omaha furnished the music. The newly-weds will make their home with his parents until the first of the month, when they will move to a farm in south Ida County, three miles north of the home place, which Leslie and Leonard have been farming with their father for a number of years.

**NOTE that the above mentions the Herman Schiernbecks are *not* related. Herman S. of Otter Creek Twp. is my Wilhelm's son and Herman S. of Ida Grove is Wulf's son (if my memory serves). So ... I would presume that if Wulf & my Wilhelm were brothers, then there Hermans would know they were 1st cousins. Of course maybe they did. Maybe the family didn't get along as they seem to have in the earlier years. Maybe they were trying to head off talk of a kissin' cousins marriage. I don't know. So, here lies another piece to this confusing puzzle. As a side note Leslie 1914-1977 is buried in Morgan Cemetery ... alone. I do not know what happened to Marie. Maybe the marriage didn't work out? I don't have any information on children.

Questions, questions, questions. So much mystery. There must be questionable stuff here, or why would it be so difficult to uncover. At the very least possibly a family that traveled across the ocean wide only to come to America and go their own directions. It wouldn't be the first time. The few Schiernbeck relatives that I have been in contact will only establish their relationship to me. Any questions I've had concerning our common history have gone unanswered. I simply to not receive any return emails. I don't understand it. There've even been a couple folks who've stated they have a photo of my Wilhelm with his second wife. They've offered to email me a copy, because I've never seen a photo of him. Yet I wait ... and wait ... and wait. Writing again only to receive no answer. This is a brick wall that shouldn't be. There are too many clues, too many people. UGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Okay, I'm putting this away for yet another day. Too frustrating.
