Herbert Edward Christie
(April 2, 1875 – December 20, 1943)

Arthur Resident For Many Years
Herbert Christie Dies On Dec. 20
(Editor’s note – Published below is the complete obituary of Herbert Edward Christie, Arthur resident, who passed away suddenly here on Monday, Dec. 20. The obituary was crowded out last week.)
Herbert Edward Christie, son of Andrew and Hattie Christie, was born at Austin, Ind., April 2, 1875, and departed from his life Monday, December 20, 1943 at Ida Grove, at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 18 days. His childhood years were spent on the home farm near Austin, where he was educated in the rural schools of that area. In addition to the regular rigorous duties of the farm, Bert spent much time in his early youth in tenderly caring for his mother who was an invalid.
Married In 1897
On January 19, 1897, he was united in marriage to Miss Ada Rigel at Austin. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Rose Krick of Ida Grove, and Mrs. Vivian Waggoner of Arthur. In 1912, settling his vision to greater opportunities in the west, Bert moved his family to a farm eight miles southwest of Ida Grove. There they remained until 1920, when Mrs. Christie entered the gas business in Odebolt.
Came to Arthur
In 1924 the family came to Arthur to make their home, where Mr. Christie worked with the Farmers Elevator Co., and later conducted a trucking business, until his retirement about three years ago. In his early youth, Mr. Christie became a member of the Baptist Church and proclaimed his faith before all men in baptism. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows for some 38 years. In his business dealings, Mr. Christie had a reputation for honesty, integrity, and dependability, and he also took a keen interest in community, state, national, and international affairs and was ready to contribute his convictions in discussion with others. At the time of his passing, he had been called to Ida Grove for jury duty, and while leaving the court house was suddenly taken. But he was also a great “homeman,” lavishing much love and exercising great devotion in the up-bringing of his children. And in later years, when his two daughters had grown to womanhood, and gone away to make homes of their own, he became the friend of every child in the community. Little or big, they all called him “Christie” and were always sure of a cheerful answer. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Rose Krick of Ida Grove, and Mrs. Vivian Waggoner of Arthur, two granddaughters, Barbara Jean Krick of Sioux City, and Nancy Lee Waggoner of Arthur, one brother, E. L. Christie of Austin, and a host of other relatives and friends, who will long remember Herbert Edward Christie.
