Roger L. Schmidt, age 85, of Ida Grove, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the Odebolt Specialty Care of Odebolt, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Rev. Kevin J. Freese will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein, Iowa. A Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Roger Lee Schmidt, the son of Mary G. (Boysen) and Alfred H. Schmidt, Sr., was born on September 11, 1937, in Ida Grove, Iowa. He received his education at Ida Grove High School graduating with the class of 1955. On February 16, 1957, Roger was united in marriage to Carol J. Leonard at the United Methodist Church in Holstein, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four children: Kirk, Kyle, Kelly, and Kory. The family made their home in Battle Creek, Iowa. Roger and Carol later parted ways but remained close friends. Roger was employed at various places throughout his life. He worked at a grease gun manufacturer, delivered milk, was a night custodian, worked at Wilson Foods, and farmed. Later in life he attended Western Iowa Community College in Sioux City, Iowa, for carpentry. Roger retired in 1996 and moved to Ida Grove. Roger was an avid hunter and trapper. He enjoyed fishing and took many trips to Minnesota fishing. Roger treasured time spent with his family; especially with his grandchildren. One of his greatest passions was gardening. He was known for his large garden and sharing his produce with others. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his children Kirk Schmidt of Ida Grove, IA, Kyle (Monica) Schmidt of Danbury, IA, Kelly Harris of Battle Creek, IA and Kory Schmidt (Christi Mallow) of Battle Creek, IA; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brother Don (Darlene) Schmidt of Holstein, IA; extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Alfred Schmidt, Sr.; his former wife Carol Schmidt; siblings Alfred Jr. “Bud” (Vernette) Schmidt; DeWayne Schmidt, Earl Dean (Ruth) Schmidt and Arlene (Lloyd) Babcock; and great-grandson Zentechatar Petro.
