(February 17, 1923 - January 13, 2013)Elmer Sahl, age 89, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Adam Peck will officiate, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion. Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Born February 17, 1923, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Elmer was the third of seven children born to Jens and Olga (Kiertzner) Sahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1941. From 1943-46, Elmer served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre. On December 1, 1943, he was united in marriage to Ruby Christiansen in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with five children, Victoria, Kristine, Alan, Brian, and Curtis.
Elmer farmed from 1946 until 1961. He was a rural mail carrier for many years, retiring in 1988, and served several years on the volunteer ambulance squad. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, the Rural Letter Carriers Association, and the American Legion for over 60 years. Elmer enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, and playing cards. He spent a lot of time on woodworking projects and, in recent years, enjoyed meeting his cronies for coffee. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; five children, Victoria (Darrell) Madsen of Shenandoah, Kristine (Michael) Drouilhet of Carlsbad, CA, Alan (Jami) Sahl of Tualatin, OR, Brian (Lesa) Sahl of Arthur, and Curtis (Kim) Sahl of Ida Grove; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elaine (Jack) Cherry of Winterhaven, FL, Jane Yancey of Sebring, FL, and Joan (Dean) Van Horn of Garland, TX; and many other relatives and friends.
