Obituary – Mrs. Bessie Flanagan
The people of Ida Grove and vicinity were surprised and grieved Tuesday evening, November 4 when announcement of the death of Mrs. Bessie Flanagan was received. She enjoyed good health, but was suddenly stricken with a heart attack at 10 a.m. Tuesday which was the cause of her unexpected death. She was a sincere Christian and her death is universally regretted.
Elizabeth O’Brecht was born in Ida County, July 27, 1883; she was the daughter of Charles and Chatherine O’Brecht. She lived most of her life in Ida County, except 10 years in Sioux City and the last eight years in Seattle, Wash. She was united in marriage to John Flanagan on February 5, 1902. Eight children were born to them. She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Dorothy. Those surviving are: Edward, Mrs. Katherine Bechtel, John, Ross, William, and Thomas, all of Washington and Mrs. Ruth Hoffman of Ida Grove; also three grandsons, three sisters, Mrs. Bernard Hamann, Mrs. Chris Schiernbeck of Ida Grove, and Mrs. Frank Schiernbeck of Correctionville, and one brother, Benjamin O’Brecht of Kiron. Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church Monday at 9:30 a.m. with requiem mass and a discourse by Rev. Father Eckstein of Chicago. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Harold Irwin, Hugh McGuire, Gene Galvin, Cliff Conover, George Hofman Sr., and Albert Briese. Those from out of town attending were: Mrs. Arthur Bechtel, Mr. and Mrs. John Flanagan of Bellevue, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Flanagan, Edward, William and Thomas Flanagan of Seattle; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schiernbeck and family of Correctionville; Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Williamson, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Muchow and children, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Conley, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Ben O’Brecht, Mr. and Mrs. Bud O’Brecht, Kiron; Mr. and Mrs. Gayle O’Brecht of Dunlap.
