Benjamin John Obrecht
Benjamin John Obrecht was born in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa on July 17, 1895. He attended grade school in Hayes Township and high school in Ida Grove, Iowa. He then engaged in farming in Hayes Township on his mother’s farm. During World War I he enlisted in the army and served as a First Sergeant of E Truck Company in Europe during the war and in the Army of Occupation. He received his honorable discharge on July 8, 1919. For four years after his discharge he worked at the carpenter trade in Ida Grove, and then engaged in farming in Kiron, Iowa, for three years. He received his appointment as a rural mail carrier in 1927, a position he still held at the time of his death. On February 12, 1924, he was united in marriage to Edna Cecelia Swanson of Kiron, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Gayle Charles and Benjamin Peter. Kiron was his home for 31 years. He passed away while vacationing at Spirit Lake, Iowa on Saturday afternoon, June 9, 1956, at 3:00. He had reached the age of 60 years, 10 months and 23 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Kate Obrecht, and one sister, Bess. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Edna; his two sons, Gayle and Benjamin; 7 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Eva Hamann and Mrs. Essie Schiernbeck, both of Ida Grove and Mr. Nell Schiernbeck of Danbury. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church with Rev. Wallace E. Larson officiating. Mrs. Lloyd Benson and Mrs. Irvin Hummel sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Good Night and Good Morning,” accompanied by Mrs. Richard Gustafson. Burial was in the Kiron Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Melvin Ericson, Norris Ericson, Curtis Ericson, Gage Swanson, Wayne Swanson and Douglas Swanson.
