(June 19, 1853 – April 22, 1930)

Ida County Pioneer Record, Ida Grove, Iowa, Thurs., April 24, 1930, p.1
Sudden Death of Carl Aug. Carlson
Had Resided in Hayes Twp. Almost 50 Years. Funeral Held Friday.
Carl August Carlson was born in Nova Socken, Orebro Lan, Sweden, June 19, 1853. Here he spent his early years until 1876 when he immigrated to this country. He settled at Amboy, Ill., where he remained 5 years. In the fall of 1881 he came to Iowa making his home in Hayes Township, and has resided here ever since. He and Anders Anderson of Hayes are believed to be the last of the original Swedish colony that settled in the southeastern part of the county. Mr. Carlson was united in marriage to Miss Albertina Anderson, June 24, 1883. This happy union was blessed with 10 children, four of whom have preceded the father in death and six of whom remain to feel his loss. The close relatives who will feel this vacancy are his faithful wife and life long companion, two sons who are married and reside in this community: Albert and Emil Carlson; two daughters at home, the Misses Selma and Ellen Carlson; and two sons at home, Oscar and Reuben. There is also one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Larson of Des Moines, and two brothers, John Bertel of Peasli, Mont., and Andrew Bertel of Duluth, Minn. Besides these there are five grandchildren, many other relatives as well as a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
Mr. Carlson was one of the few remaining pioneers of this community having resided here 49 years. He was a charter member of the Odebolt Mission Church and retained his membership there until the time of his demise. He has been in good health, hardy and strong until last winter when he began to fail in health. He seemed however, to be in better health again when he suddenly became the victim of a stroke Thursday morning, April 17. From this he never fully recovered. He passed away at peace with his Creator at 3:30 Tuesday morning, April 22. At the time of this death Mr. Carlson had reached the age of 76 years, 10 months and 3 days. The funeral will be held from the home on Friday afternoon, April 25 at 1:30 o’clock and from the Ev. Free Church, one mile west and 3 miles south of Arthur at 2 o’clock. Interment will be made in the Arthur Cemetery.
