George Charles Had Been a Resident of Ida County Since 1881
George Washington Charles, a pioneer resident of Ida County passes away Friday, March 14 at 4:45 p.m. in the office of Dr. E. S. Heilman. He had not been well for a few days and the cause of his death was a sudden attack of apoplexy. Mr. Charles was born in Millerstown, Pa. February 22, 1852, being at the time of his death seventy-eight years and twenty-two days of age. The first years of his active life he was employed as a brakeman on one of the railroads running out of Harrisburg, Pa. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida Mary Goodyear, December 24, 1875 and in the spring of 1881 they came west, settling on a farm a few miles south of Ida Grove. They also resided in a farm near Odebolt about ten years; afterwards returning to Ida County where he continued to farm a few years longer. About 22 years ago the family moved to Ida Grove where he resided until the time of his death. Mrs. Charles preceded him in death five years ago. He is survived by seven children, Perry G., of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. H. O. Bennett of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Melvin B., and Emanuel M. of Mankato, Minn., Mrs. C. A. Herbert of Yakima, Wash., Mrs. C. E. Austin of Winona, Minn., and Ira, living at home. Mr. Charles was an honest and industrious man. He was a member of the Church of God. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the late home and then from the Church of God in charge of Rev., R. Jinkerson. Interment was made in the local cemetery.
