J. V. F. Babcock Expires in West
J. V. F. Babcock, a former Ida Grove citizen, dropped dead on the streets of Los Angeles last Friday, December 26. The news of his death came as a great shock to his relatives here, as it was not known that he was in any way sick. Mrs. Finch, his sister, received a letter Saturday that had been written Dec. 22, in which he spoke of the excellence of his health and he and the family expected to eat Christmas turkey together.
Mr. Babcock was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Babcock of Ida Grove and his death occurred exactly five weeks after the burial of his younger brother, F. D. Babcock Jr. He was born at Boonesboro, Iowa, Nov. 24, 1876 and he attained the age of 54 years, 1 month and 2 days. He came with his parents to Ida Grove in 1887 and attended the public schools, graduating with the class of 1894. Following graduation, he was associated with his father in the grain business and later in the management of the Grain Shippers Mutual Insurance Co. Mr. Babcock moved to Sioux City about 12 years ago and later went to Los Angeles, where he has since resided. He was married to Nina Smith, Nov. 28, 1905. Three children were born of this marriage, all of whom survive: Phyllis, Dwight and Dean Babcock. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. W. S. Finch, Ida Grove; Mrs. T. W. Purcell, Hampton; Miss Persis Babcock, Ida Grove. The funeral was held December 31 at Los Angeles and burial was made there.
