Former Arthur Merchant Dead
John Lindsay Expires at San Jose, Calif. Funeral at Arthur Friday
John Lindsay, one of the most beloved residents of Arthur, died last Saturday morning, November first at San Jose, Calif., where he had gone a short time previously to spend the winter with his brother and in the hopes of improving his health. Mr. Lindsay had finished his breakfast, when he suddenly complained of a pain in his chest. Before any medical aid could reach him, he was dead. John Lindsay was born May 30, 1861, in Slatmore, County Tyrone, Ireland and lived to the age of 69 years, 5 months and 1 day. He came to Ida County in 1882 and for many years farmed in this county. He was married to Margaret Jane Fair in California, Sept. 22, 1894. To this union were born two sons, James Edward and Arthur Ellsworth. The mother died in August, 1897. Mr. Lindsay married Mary Emily Johnston in Fivemiletown, Ireland, Dec 11, 1907. She passed away August 4, 1927. In 1902 Mr. Lindsay retired from the farm and came to Arthur to live, where he opened a store and conducted it until 1915. During this period he made many friends by his honorable and fair business methods. After disposing of the store, he retired from active business, but continued to reside in Arthur until leaving only a week before his death, in hopes of benefitting his health in the mild California climate. Mr. Lindsay was born into a large family of eleven children. He leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs. J. H. Fair of Arthur, one brother, Andrew Lindsay of San Jose. There are the two sons and four grandchildren besides other relatives. Mr. Lindsay was a member of the Arthur Methodist church, of Ben Hur Lodge No. 611 A.F. and A.M., and of the Modern Woodmen of America. The funeral will be held at Arthur Friday, Nov. 7. Brief services at the home at 1:45 will be followed by public services at the church at 2 p.m. in charge of the pastor, Rev. F. L. Kruwell. The remains will be laid to rest in Ida Grove Cemetery.
