Obituary of Henry Holtz
Henry Holtz was born in Uelsten, Hanover, Germany on September 7, 1852. Here he received his education. Here he was baptized and made a member of Christ. Here too he reaffirmed his baptismal vow on the day of his confirmation to remain true to the Triune God. Thanks be to God that we have the firm hope that he died in the Lord. On January 17, 1879, he was united in marriage with Miss Emelia Hein. In 1929 the worthy couple was privileged to celebrate its golden wedding. A great blessing from the Lord in this age of divorces and separations. In 1882, the family came to Sterling, Ill, and in 1890 to Battle Creek. He is survived by his faithful wife, by his sons, Rudolph at home, and Henry at Correctionville; by his daughter, Mrs. Anna Janssen, also by one daughter-in-law, a son-in-law and four grand children. One half brother, August Schultz of Sterling, Ill., and one half sister, Mrs. Carl Hermecke, of Holstein, and numerous other relatives and friends. He died on Wednesday, July 9th, at 2:30 p.m. at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 2 days. On Saturday, July 12, in the afternoon, his burial was held. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. O. H.A. Hermann, pastor of the St. John’s Lutheran Church. The pastor spoke in German and English to the large assembly who had come to pay final respects to their neighbor and friend. Burial was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The following friends carried him into his final resting place: Ben Petersen, Otto Schumann Sr., Theo. Greenwald, Gus Ludwig, Gus Ericksen, and Richard Brossmle. Among those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Hoffman; Will Hoffman and Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Schultz of Sterling, Ill, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schultz and son Kenneth of Rock Falls, Ill, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hermenke, Mrs. Alfred Petersen, Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Hermecke and daughter Lorraine of Holstein, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brossmie and daughter Ruth of Jefferson, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Matt Brown of Hubbard, Neb., Miss Tillie Brown and Otto Brown of Sioux City. [Note, the obituary gives the last name spelled Holtz, while the gravestone last name is spelled Holz]
