IDA GROVE, Iowa | Dale Weaver Chisholm, 86, of Ida Grove died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, surrounded by his loved ones.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Ida Grove. The Rev. Chad Lierman will officiate, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNamara-Moore Post 61. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Born on May 30, 1926, on a farm in Grant Township near Battle Creek, Dale Weaver Chisholm was the son of Weaver and Lydia (Hess) Chisholm. He received his education at a rural school near his home and graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1943. After completing his education, Dale entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1944 to 1946 as an infantryman in the Philippines during World War II. He was honored with several medals, including two Bronze Battle Stars.

On Feb. 18, 1948, Dale was united in marriage to Freda Nielsen at First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. The couple farmed near Battle Creek until 1958, when they began farming north of Ida Grove. They were blessed with three children, Stan, Keith, and Sheryl. Dale accepted employment with the Ida Grove Post Office in 1964. In 1976, he and Freda made their home in Lake City, Iowa, where Dale continued to work for the postal service. They returned to Ida Grove in 1990, and Dale worked for Siouxland Regional Transit System as a taxi driver.

He was a member of American Legion McNamara-Moore Post 61. Dale will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, playing 500, and going prairie dog shooting. He was proud to teach his family how to handle guns safely and some had the honor of accompanying him on his South Dakota prairie dog adventures.

Survivors include three children, Stan (Denise) Chisholm of Ida Grove, Keith Chisholm of Ida Grove, and Sheryl (Mike) Rohde of Atlantic, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jamie (Julie) Chisholm of Corona, Calif., Amanda (Troy) Drey of Alton, Iowa, Katie Jo Chisholm of Ida Grove, Sarah Rohde of Pella, Iowa, and Seth Rohde of Atlantic; four great-grandchildren, Logan and Dominic Drey of Alton, and Hailey and Lindsey Chisholm of Corona; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda in 2010; his parents; a great-granddaughter, Ally Chisholm; and his siblings, Russell Chisholm, Esther Colshan, Florence Monroe and Rolland Chisholm.
