George Hueschen - Dec. 14, 1937 - Jan. 15, 2010

George Max Hueschen, age 72, of Storm Lake, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at Buena Vista Manor of Storm Lake.

George was born Dec. 14, 1937, in Holstein, the son of Otto R. Hueschen, Sr. and Ina Heitmann Hueschen. He attended elementary and secondary school in Holstein, graduating from high school in 1956. In 1956-57 George attended the University of South Dakota as a music major. Continuing his education he attended Luther College in Decorah where he was a euphonium soloist with the Luther College Band where Weston Noble became George's special mentor. He graduated from Luther in 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. In 1964 he received his Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. He was also a euphonium soloist at this institution.

George was band director in Armstrong, Gilmore City, Schaller, Leadville, Colo., Jackson, Minn., Quimby/Washta, Junction City, Kan., Marcus and Adel. While teaching at Schaller in 1981, George lost his sight and became further affected by multiple sclerosis when he chose to retire. Before retirement, George was a member of the Iowa Bandmaster's Association and an active guest soloist for various community/school bands and instructor at various music camps including the International Music Camp on the American/Canadian border at the International Peace Gardens. He also sang in or directed various church choirs through the years, including Bethlehem Lutheran in Cherokee.

For a brief time, George was employed by the Iowa Association for the Handicapped in Des Moines.

George was married to Ruth Dallmann, Jean Carter Scott, Caroline Simmons Rupp and Ann Ducommun. Divorce ended the first two marriages. Caroline and Ann died. George had no biological children, but parented several children of Caroline and Jean. George has lived in the Buena Vista Manor Nursing Home in Storm Lake since 2003. He has enjoyed his collection of sound recordings and frequent visits and phone calls from his many special friends. Being plagued with both multiple sclerosis and blindness, George fought many physical battles, but always maintained quite an interest in life and appreciated the care given him at BV Manor.

Preceding George in death were his parents and brother Otto and wives Caroline, Ann and Jean. Surviving are his sister and her husband, Mary and Cal Petersen of Vermillion, S.D., sister-in-law Jody Hueschen and three nephews: Nathan Larson, Scott Hueschen, Kurt Hueschen and one niece, Tonnya Monroe. George maintained a special stepson relationship with Kevin Rupp, son of Caroline Rupp Hueschen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church of Storm Lake with Rev. Jerry E. Oakland officiating. Burial preceded the memorial service at Holstein Cemetery. No visitation will be held. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the M.S. Society.
