Elvin B. Schimmer, age 60, of Galva, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at his home in Galva.
Elvin B. Schimmer was born on November 9, 1943, at Battle Creek, Iowa, to Leo and Elizabeth (Schleimer) Schimmer. He was baptized in the Catholic faith in Anthon, Iowa, and later confirmed in Schaller. He grew up in his parents home in Galva, Iowa, attending school in Galva through his high school graduation with the Class of 1962. He served his country with honor in the National Guard from 1965-1968.
On December 5, 1970, Elvin was united in marriage to Janet Gaskill at Cherokee, Iowa. This union was blessed with a son, Kyle and a daughter, Melanie.
Elvin was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein where he was a member and treasurer of the Men’s Club and served on the religious education board. He spent his life as a farmer working the land he loved and caring for his cherished family.
In his spare moments, Elvin enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He and Jan shared wonderful memories of their trips to Colorado where they particularly delighted in seeing the mountains.
Elvin was loved by his family and will be missed daily.
Survivors include his wife Jan of Galva; son Kyle and his wife Jennifer of Galva; and daughter Melanie of Denver, Colorado; brother Leo Schimmer of Storm Lake; sisters: Norma Schemmel of Remsen, Shirley & husband Dewyne Stucynski of Storm Lake; brother-in-law Allan and wife Bev Johnson of Hinton, IA; sister-in-law Janet Schimmer of Storm Lake, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
Preceding Elvin in death were his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Schimmer, his brother Paul, his sister Corrine Johnson, his brother-in-law Robert Schemmel and his sister-in-law Wilma Schimmer.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003, at 10:30 a.m at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein with Reverend David Hemann officiating. Burial will be held in the Calvary Cemetery in Holstein.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein, where the family will be present. There will be a Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and Scripture Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
